Start with the question you need answered

An EV battery health test can mean several different things. You may want to understand remaining usable energy, investigate a warning, document condition before purchase or support a warranty claim. Those questions need different evidence. Ask a provider exactly what their test measures, which vehicles it supports and what the report will contain. A check of the small low-voltage battery is not a traction-battery capacity assessment. Confirm that the quotation concerns the high-voltage battery before booking.

Vehicle-reported BMS information

The battery management system uses its own measurements and models to manage the battery. A diagnostic reader may expose a reported SoH value together with supporting information. That can be useful evidence, but reading a value is not the same as independently measuring all available energy. Retain the method, app or software version, date, mileage and vehicle match. EVVerity labels a value you enter as reported BMS SoH; it does not authenticate the device, screenshot or underlying report.

Manufacturer onboard tests

Some vehicles offer a manufacturer-defined health procedure. Tesla’s current Model 3 manual is one example; availability and prerequisites vary. Consult the manual for the actual vehicle and allow the time and charging access it requires. Do not improvise a test by driving a battery close to empty, repeatedly forcing a full cycle or changing service settings. A seller’s everyday range display and the output of a defined battery test should be recorded separately.

Independent diagnostic assessments

Independent providers use different methods. A short stationary assessment may combine diagnostic data with a provider’s model or reference set. An assessment that measures energy over an operating window answers a different question. Ask whether the report gives a vehicle-reported value, an independently derived estimate or a measured-energy result. Ask how incomplete data, temperature and charge level affect interpretation. A certificate’s name or visual design does not tell you its method, uncertainty or suitability for a warranty claim.

Capacity tests and their measurement boundary

A capacity comparison needs a stated energy boundary. Grid electricity delivered to a charger includes losses and potentially heating or cooling; it cannot simply be equated with usable battery energy. A professional capacity test should explain its procedure, starting and ending conditions, what was measured and the reference used. Do not attempt high-voltage measurements yourself. If a report provides both kWh and a percentage, check that the denominator is documented and corresponds to the installed pack and configuration.

Range and consumption as an initial cross-check

Multiplying a full-charge range estimate by matching battery-side consumption provides an inferred energy estimate. It is accessible and can help organise a buying conversation, but neither input is a laboratory measurement of the pack. Using a recent motorway average with a range prediction learned from city trips can create a misleading answer. Our estimator shows an editable sensitivity band and keeps any reported SoH separate. Use it to identify questions, not to certify a vehicle or decide a warranty claim.

What to request before paying for a test

Ask for a sample report with personal details removed. Confirm compatibility with the exact vehicle, the test duration, any arrival charge requirements, tax and repeat-test charges. Ask whether the provider explains fault codes and cell observations or only supplies a summary percentage. For a purchase, agree how the seller will make the vehicle available. For a warranty concern, ask the warrantor which procedure it accepts before commissioning unrelated work. Keep unresolved questions visible even when a report has an overall pass result.

Compare the evidence, not just the test name

Use this matrix when asking a seller or provider what evidence is available. The categories describe information boundaries, not a ranking of commercial test brands.

Evidence routeQuestion it can help answerWhat to verify
BMS readingWhat does the vehicle currently report?Definition, software, vehicle match and date
Manufacturer procedureWhat does this defined vehicle test report?Availability, prerequisites and complete output
Independent assessmentWhat does the provider’s method conclude?Method, uncertainty, compatibility and report scope
Range × consumptionWhat usable energy do these paired inputs imply?Matching conditions; an estimate, not measured SoH

Choose the next step from the missing evidence

If the only evidence is an advert saying “excellent battery”, begin by asking what document supports it. If a complete report exists but its denominator is unclear, request an explanation before paying for another test. If the concern is a warning or charging failure, describe the symptom to a qualified provider rather than selecting a capacity test solely because it is inexpensive.

Before you rely on the answer

  • Is this a traction-battery assessment rather than a low-voltage battery check?
  • Does the report identify the method and its limitations?
  • Will this procedure answer my buying or warranty question?

Which battery evidence do you have?

Choose the closest description for a useful next step. This does not diagnose the car.

I have a diagnostic report

Check the vehicle match, date, method and capacity reference. Enter any reported BMS SoH separately. If the report contains a different kind of derived health score, keep its original label and ask the provider how to interpret it.

Read the report checklist →

The vehicle offers an onboard health test

Use the current owner’s manual for the exact vehicle. Confirm availability, preparation and duration with the seller. A test may not be practical during a short viewing; do not improvise a full discharge or change service settings.

Compare the test methods →

I only have range and consumption

Use figures from matching conditions for an initial usable-energy estimate. Confirm the original usable baseline before calculating degradation. This does not measure SoH or establish whether a warranty claim qualifies.

Estimate with a visible sensitivity band →

I do not have usable battery evidence yet

Age, mileage and VIN do not establish actual battery health. Request a recent report or discuss a suitable test with a qualified provider. Ask about supported vehicles, measurement method, scope and the final price.
