A headline is only a starting point
Battery warranties can contain a time limit, distance limit and separate capacity condition. Coverage may depend on the model, market, use and original terms. Current Tesla and Nissan UK pages illustrate why one global number is insufficient. Use the document issued for the actual vehicle and ask the manufacturer to confirm anything unclear.
Calculate headroom carefully
Start with the warranty’s actual commencement date, not an assumed January model-year date. Compare elapsed time and current distance with the relevant limits. Where the contract says “whichever comes first,” either limit can end coverage. If the distance limit is missing, a remaining-time figure alone cannot establish that the battery is still covered.
Distinguish a capacity promise from every other fault
A contractual capacity threshold does not necessarily describe all covered defects, nor does a reported SoH below it automatically complete a claim. The manufacturer may require its own diagnostic procedure and supporting records. Read the sections on exclusions, maintenance, transfers, imports and replacement parts. Different measurement definitions can affect whether two apparent percentages are comparable.
Keep verification outside the calculator
Our analyzer computes time and distance headroom from your inputs. It cannot authenticate warranty status, confirm eligibility or determine whether a specific repair will be paid for. Before relying on cover, obtain confirmation from the party responsible for it. Keep the document version and correspondence with the vehicle records. This guide explains an approach to reading a warranty; it is not a determination of your legal rights.
Keep a warranty evidence card
Use the original applicable document and ask the responsible provider to resolve unclear terms. This table is a reading aid, not a substitute for that confirmation.
| Item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Commencement | Actual start date and source of that date. |
| End conditions | Time, distance and whichever-first wording. |
| Capacity provision | Threshold, definition and required assessment method. |
| Eligibility | Market, transfer, use, service and replacement-pack conditions. |
How headroom can mislead
For a hypothetical eight-year or 160,000 km warranty, a six-year-old car at 150,000 km has two years of time headroom and only 10,000 km of distance headroom. At a planned 20,000 km per year, that distance would be used in roughly six months if driving remains steady. This scenario does not determine the actual end date or confirm that a claim is covered. A missing distance limit cannot be interpreted as unlimited mileage. A replacement pack may also have different documentary terms, so do not reset the original warranty clock simply because a repair invoice exists.
Before you rely on the answer
- Who has confirmed that these terms apply to this car?
- Which limit is likely to be reached first under your use?
- What evidence would a capacity claim require?
