How to convert kWh/100 km to miles per kWh
Divide 100 by your consumption in kWh/100 km to get kilometres per kWh, then divide by 1.609344 to get miles per kWh. Equivalently, miles/kWh = 62.1371192 ÷ kWh/100 km. For an illustrative 18 kWh/100 km, the result is approximately 3.45 miles/kWh.
How to convert miles per kWh to kWh/100 km
Use the same reciprocal: kWh/100 km = 62.1371192 ÷ miles/kWh. An illustrative 4 miles/kWh is about 15.53 kWh/100 km. It is also 250 Wh/mile: one kWh is 1,000 Wh, divided across four miles. Multiplying a miles/kWh value by 1.609344 instead gives kilometres/kWh, a different unit.
| kWh/100 km | miles/kWh | Wh/km | Wh/mile | kWh/100 miles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | 5.18 | 120 | 193.1 | 19.31 |
| 15 | 4.14 | 150 | 241.4 | 24.14 |
| 18 | 3.45 | 180 | 289.7 | 28.97 |
| 20 | 3.11 | 200 | 321.9 | 32.19 |
| 25 | 2.49 | 250 | 402.3 | 40.23 |
| 30 | 2.07 | 300 | 482.8 | 48.28 |
Is a higher or lower number better?
Energy per distance describes how much electricity is needed: lower kWh/100 km, Wh/km, Wh/mile or kWh/100 miles means less energy for the same distance. Distance per energy describes how far that electricity takes you: higher miles/kWh or km/kWh means more distance for the same energy. These are reciprocal views of the same measurement, so do not compare their raw numbers directly.
Does conversion include charging losses?
No. A dashboard consumption figure remains a dashboard figure after conversion. A wall-meter figure remains a wall-meter figure. EPA explains that its MPGe values include charging losses; a unit conversion alone cannot turn a battery-side driving figure into that label value. Record where the energy was measured before using a converted value in a cost or range calculation.
For battery-side consumption, the charging cost calculator can apply a separate loss assumption. If the figure already includes billed charging energy, avoid adding those same losses a second time. Range planning needs consumption consistent with the usable battery energy you enter.
Can I compare two cars with this?
You can put their figures in matching units. That does not make the tests equivalent: keep vehicle configuration, measurement boundary, driving conditions and test cycle visible. A motorway trip in cold weather and a mild-weather city average answer different questions. Converting EPA and WLTP numbers does not create a universal conversion between their test procedures.
