Why is this an estimate?

Resale value is your scenario, not a market forecast. The separate loan payment is a cash-flow figure. No balloon, arrangement fees or early-settlement costs are modelled.

See how the calculation works

Economic cost = depreciation + interest paid during ownership + running costs. Loan principal is not added to depreciation.

Resale value is your scenario, not a market forecast. The separate loan payment is a cash-flow figure. No balloon, arrangement fees or early-settlement costs are modelled.

Separate ownership cost from the monthly loan payment

Depreciation is purchase price minus your assumed resale value over the ownership period. The tool adds finance interest and operating expenses. It does not add the loan principal again to depreciation, because that would count the same purchase cost twice.

Where to get useful inputs

  • Enter insurance, tax and maintenance amounts for a full year.
  • Use your actual finance terms; this is a simplified amortising-loan calculation, not a lender quotation.
  • Try more than one resale assumption. It is an estimate you supply, not a market valuation.
Why is monthly ownership cost different from cash paid this month?

Ownership cost spreads depreciation and the relevant expenses across the ownership period. Cash flow also depends on deposits, repayments and when bills fall due. Read the separate finance figures and the stated model limitations.
